pAsuram 5

In this pAsuram most of the gOpikAs have come together and are wondering how they will succeed in their nOnbu of reaching krIshNa, as the pApas they have accumulated over their lifetime would likely prevent them from reaching krIshNa. Another gOpikA explains that if one does kainkaryam using the heart, tongue and body (mAnasa, vAchika, kAyikam) expecting nothing from krIshNa, other than himself, krIshNa will end the pApas like the cotton ball falling in the fire and getting destroyed.

In this pAsuram ANdAL calls out to the vada madurai maindhan, denoting the archai form (the diety form of emperumAn).

ANdAL is an avathAram of bhUdhEvi nAchiyAr, the divine consort of srIman nAryAyaNan. bhUdhEvai nAchiyAr appears in this world as ANdAL (also known as gOdhA dhEvi) to explain the glories of emperumAn in very simple thamizh and help the jIvAthmAs to relieve their sufferings in this samsAram and accomplish the true goal of every jIvAthamA – blemishless kainkaryam to emperumAn.

She compiled two dhivya prabhandhams when she was very young. First, she sung thiruppAvai, requesting emperumAn to engage her in his kainkaryam, purely for his own pleasure. Subsequently, since emperumAn did not fulfill her request, with great sorrow out of the separation from emperumAn, she sung nAchiyAr thirumozhi and finally periya perumAL invites her to srIrangam and accepts her and she returns back to paramapadham leaving us behind these two precious gems (thiruppAvai and nAchiyAr thirumozhi).

mArgazhi is the auspicious month in which AndAL sang the divine tiruppAvai. Let us enjoy tiruppAvai in the form of word puzzles. Click on the links below to find the important words from each tiruppAvai pAsuram.

pAsuram 4

In this pAsuram ANdAL describes how the demi gods (devathAntharas) are willing to help the gOpikas and ANdAL succeed in this nOnbu. The gOpikas command that the rain god varuna provide the earth with rain, once every 10 days and help keep the land fertile.

ANdAL is praying to the antaryAmi form of emperumAn (hidden inside varuna dhEvan), the hidden form in everyone.

pAsuram 3:

In this pAsuram ANdAL is celebrating the most pure, honest and very helpful emperumAn in the form of trivikrama perumAL. ANdAL describes what good will happen to the world if one devotee of emperumAn met krIshNa. Imagine the goodness that would happen when the 5 lakh gOpikas meet krIshNa.

ANdAL quotes the “vibhava” form of emperumAn. vibhava denotes the many avathAras that emperumAn took in this world to save his devotees.

pAsuram 1:

In the first pAsuram AndAL starts the mArgazhi nOnbu, per the rules followed in AyarpAdi (gOkula) in the times of krIshNa and his gOpikas, AndAL learned about this nOnbu from the stories she had listened from her father – periyAzhwAr. AndAL and her friends are celebrating that they are able to follow the nOnbu in the very auspicious month of mArgazhi. The first half of the line talks about the ways to do the nOnbu, while the second half of the pAsuram talks about what one would get on finishing the nOnbu (being with krIshNa). This pAsuram also denotes the “parathvam” of emperumAn in the name nArAyaNa. parathvam is the ability of emperumAn to be present in everything and all pervading – like prahalAda says that nrUsimha perumAL is in every small thing, including the pillar that hiraNyan is showing.
