pAsuram 5

In this pAsuram most of the gOpikAs have come together and are wondering how they will succeed in their nOnbu of reaching krIshNa, as the pApas they have accumulated over their lifetime would likely prevent them from reaching krIshNa. Another gOpikA explains that if one does kainkaryam using the heart, tongue and body (mAnasa, vAchika, kAyikam) expecting nothing from krIshNa, other than himself, krIshNa will end the pApas like the cotton ball falling in the fire and getting destroyed.

In this pAsuram ANdAL calls out to the vada madurai maindhan, denoting the archai form (the diety form of emperumAn).

ANdAL is an avathAram of bhUdhEvi nAchiyAr, the divine consort of srIman nAryAyaNan. bhUdhEvai nAchiyAr appears in this world as ANdAL (also known as gOdhA dhEvi) to explain the glories of emperumAn in very simple thamizh and help the jIvAthmAs to relieve their sufferings in this samsAram and accomplish the true goal of every jIvAthamA – blemishless kainkaryam to emperumAn.

She compiled two dhivya prabhandhams when she was very young. First, she sung thiruppAvai, requesting emperumAn to engage her in his kainkaryam, purely for his own pleasure. Subsequently, since emperumAn did not fulfill her request, with great sorrow out of the separation from emperumAn, she sung nAchiyAr thirumozhi and finally periya perumAL invites her to srIrangam and accepts her and she returns back to paramapadham leaving us behind these two precious gems (thiruppAvai and nAchiyAr thirumozhi).

mArgazhi is the auspicious month in which AndAL sang the divine tiruppAvai. Let us enjoy tiruppAvai in the form of word puzzles. Click on the links below to find the important words from each tiruppAvai pAsuram.

pAsuram 4

In this pAsuram ANdAL describes how the demi gods (devathAntharas) are willing to help the gOpikas and ANdAL succeed in this nOnbu. The gOpikas command that the rain god varuna provide the earth with rain, once every 10 days and help keep the land fertile.

ANdAL is praying to the antaryAmi form of emperumAn (hidden inside varuna dhEvan), the hidden form in everyone.

pAsuram 3:

In this pAsuram ANdAL is celebrating the most pure, honest and very helpful emperumAn in the form of trivikrama perumAL. ANdAL describes what good will happen to the world if one devotee of emperumAn met krIshNa. Imagine the goodness that would happen when the 5 lakh gOpikas meet krIshNa.

ANdAL quotes the “vibhava” form of emperumAn. vibhava denotes the many avathAras that emperumAn took in this world to save his devotees.

pAsuram 1:

In the first pAsuram AndAL starts the mArgazhi nOnbu, per the rules followed in AyarpAdi (gOkula) in the times of krIshNa and his gOpikas, AndAL learned about this nOnbu from the stories she had listened from her father – periyAzhwAr. AndAL and her friends are celebrating that they are able to follow the nOnbu in the very auspicious month of mArgazhi. The first half of the line talks about the ways to do the nOnbu, while the second half of the pAsuram talks about what one would get on finishing the nOnbu (being with krIshNa). This pAsuram also denotes the “parathvam” of emperumAn in the name nArAyaNa. parathvam is the ability of emperumAn to be present in everything and all pervading – like prahalAda says that nrUsimha perumAL is in every small thing, including the pillar that hiraNyan is showing.

In the previous post we saw how krishNa was already winning over the many demons, when he was just a small baby. Sometimes one would wonder if krishNa ever acted like a baby, given that He was the parmAthma himself. krishNa with his leelais has always enchanted jIvAthmAs for generations.

After the incident with chakatAsura, life was back to normal in gOkula. yashOdha and nandhagOpa were enjoying krishNa, along with balarAma and rohiNi dEvi. krishNa was growing well, starting to crawl and play with things around, knocking things in his way.

One day, as yashOdha was working in the kitchen and krishNa joined her. Seeing krishNa,  she lifted him and was playing with him. In order to do some work, she put him down in the backyard for a moment. At that same moment, it started raining heavily with the wind blowing. Yashoda came hurrying back, to take krishNa inside, but before she returned, a very strong wind, shaped like a funnel blew and took krishNa in it. yashOdha cried out loud that a tornado had taken krishNa away. Make the puzzle below to see how krishNa was carried away by a tornado!

tirnavartha

This asura, named tirNAvartha, carried krishNa to the upper layers of the atmosphere. His plan was to go very far away into the sky and then throw krishNa down to earth and end krishNa. As triNAvartha went higher and higher, he felt a bit breathless. The breathlessness kept increasing and he also found krishNa to be heavier. It seemed as though krishNa was growing bigger and heavier and the hands of krishNa were strangling tirNAvartha. In no time triNAvartha could no longer breathe and dropped dead, heavily near gOkula. The search party in gOkula heard this very loud thud and came towards the source of the sound. There! They found krishNa happily laughing and playing on this asura. Make the puzzle below to see the scene described above.

trinavarta-2

As krishNa was growing up, there were more asuras that kamsa kept sending.

aghAsura was an asura who took the form of a snake. aghAsura’s idea was to lure krishNa and his friends by keeping his mouth open wide. Once inside, aghAsura could just close his mouth and digest the kids, along with krishNa. aghAsura conveniently took his place in an area within the dense forest, where kids would always come exploring. As aghAsura expected krishNa’s friends wandered inside and stayed exploring aghAsura’s internal parts for a long time. krishNa looked for his friends for a long time and then came into aghAsura’s mouth too. Once krishNa went inside a bit, aghAsura closed his mouth and everything became dark. krishNa understood what was going on and appeased his scared friends. Eventually, krishNa punched through aghAsura’s skin and saved his friend. Make the puzzle below to see how aghAsura was.

Aghasura

Like aghAsura, there was another asura, who came in the form of a crane and lured krishNa and his friends inside his beak. krishNa split open the beaks of this crane formed asura, called bakAsura and saved his friends and himself. This act of krishNa splitting the crane’s beaks is very celebrated by AzhwArs and pUrvAchAryAs. Once instance of this incident as celebrated by AndAL is:

புள்ளின்வாய் கீண்டானைப் பொல்லா அரக்கனைக்…- Tiruppavai 13

Here AndAL recalls the incident of krishNa splitting open the crane’s beak, as one of the greatest acts of krishNa as a child. The story goes that bakAsura stayed on the banks of river yamuna and swallowed krishNa along with his friends. krishNa, once inside krishNa burnt the heart of bakAsura. Unable to bear the heat, bakAsura spit krishNa out and try to win over him, with his beaks. Seeing that bakAsura was not going to stop his fight against him, krishNa splits up the beak of bakAsura and finishes him. Make the puzzle below to see bakAsura.
