Am I right pAtti?<\/p>\n pAtti : parASara, you are right ,\u00a0ashta dhik gajangaL are the 8 primary Sishyas of\u00a0maNavALa mAmunigaL.\u00a0ponnadikkAl jIyar<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0kOyil aNNan<\/a>,\u00a0 <\/span>pathangi paravasthu pattarpirAn jIyar<\/a>, thiruvEnkata jIyar,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>eRumbiappA<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>prathivAdhi bhayankaram aNNan<\/a>, appiLLai<\/a>, appiLLAr<\/a>. These great Sishyas of mAmunigaL were most influential in the growth of our sampradhAyam after mAmunigaL’s times. Let us start with ponnadikkAl jIyar who was prANa sukruth (dear like life) to his AchAryan\u00a0maNavALa mAmunigaL .<\/p>\n pAtti :\u00a0 Born as azhagiya varadhar, he became to be famously known as ponnadikkAl jIyar.<\/p>\n parASara\u00a0 :\u00a0pAtti, why he is called as\u00a0\u00a0ponnadikkAl jIyar ?<\/p>\n pAtti : ponnadikkAl means the one who laid the foundation of mAmunigaL\u2019s Sishya sampath (i.e. wealth of Sishyas).\u00a0ponnadikkAl jIyar was held as purushakAram by many AchAryas to approach mAmunigaL.<\/p>\n mAmunigaL also appointed ashta dhik gajangaL to ponndikkAl jIyar. mAmunigaL instructed ponnadikkAl jIyar to go to vAnamAmalai as dheyvanAyakan emperumAn\u00a0(vAnamAmalai) sends SrImukam (an instruction) through sEnai mudhaliAr to mAmunigaL that ponnadikkAl jIyar\u00a0should be sent to vAnamAmalai dhivya dhEsam to look after the kainkaryam there.<\/p>\n vyAsa : pAtti, ponnadikkAl jIyar was\u00a0father-in-law to dheyvanAyakan emperumAn.\u00a0 Am I right\u00a0 ?<\/p>\n pAtti : yes\u00a0vyAsa, correct.\u00a0ponnadikkAl jIyar was the one to bring nAchiyAr vigraham (divine deity of thAyAr) from thirumalai and arranged a grand wedding with dheyvanAyakan emperumAn and he himself performs kannikAdhAnam. dheyvanAyakan emperumAn proclaimed that \u201clike periyAzhwAr, ponnadikkAl jIyar is also his father-in-law\u201d.<\/p>\n He went to various parts of bhAratha dhESam and spread our sampradhAyam based on mAmunigaL’s orders. In the end, meditating upon his AchAryan azhagiya maNavALa mAmunigaL’s divine feet,\u00a0ponnadikkAl jIyar\u00a0gives up his charama thirumEni and\u00a0attains paramapadham.<\/p>\n Let us pray at the lotus feet of ponnadikkAl jIyar that we also develop such attachment towards emperumAnAr and our AchAryan.<\/p>\n pAtti : Our next discussion is about\u00a0kOyil aNNan,\u00a0\u00a0He becomes one of the dearest disciples and ashta dig gajangaL. An interesting incident happened in the life of koil aNNan , which took him to take the shelter of mAmunigal.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n parASara\u00a0 :\u00a0pAtti, what was the incident ??<\/p>\n pAtti : Appreciating your curiosity parASara ,\u00a0Born in the illustrious family lineage of\u00a0mudhaliyANdAn , he did not want to take shelter of\u00a0 mAmunigaL. The incident brought him back to take the lotus feet of\u00a0\u00a0mAmunigaL.\u00a0kOyil aNNan (as popularly known) was living in SrIrangam with many Sishyas . You all know\u00a0 SrI bhAshyakArar (SrI rAmAnujar) was the one who ordered\u00a0kOyil aNNan to\u00a0become the disciple of mAmunigaL.\u00a0 SrI rAmAnujar guided kOyil aNNan and asked to utilise his relationship with\u00a0mudhaliyANdAn properly.<\/p>\n emperumAnAr said “I am Adhi sEshan and have come again as\u00a0maNavALa mAmunigaL. You and your relatives become the disciple of mAmunigaL and be uplifted”. Children, the whole incident happened in his dream. The dream stops and aNNan wakes being totally shocked. He explains the incidents to his brothers with great emotions.<\/p>\n aNNan along with many other kandhAdai family AchArya purushas go to jIyar mutt to take shelter of\u00a0mAmunigaL.\u00a0mAmunigaL instructs vAnamAmalai (ponnadikkAl) jIyar to prepare the necessary aspects and performs pancha samskAram to all of them.<\/p>\n So Kids , we have seen some glimpses of the glorious life of kOyil kandhAdai aNNan. He was very dear to\u00a0mAmunigaL. Let us pray at his lotus feet that we too get a little bit of such abhimAnam of AchAryan.<\/p>\n Next I will tell about\u00a0mOr munnAr ayyar (paravasthu pattarpirAn jIyar). He is one of the ashta dhik gajangaL\u00a0of mAmunigaL.\u00a0He stayed with\u00a0mAmunigaL\u00a0without ever separating from him just like\u00a0embAr\u00a0who always stayed with\u00a0emperumAnAr.<\/p>\n vEdhavalli: pAtti, why he is known as\u00a0\u00a0mOr munnAr ayyar ?<\/p>\n pAtti\u00a0:\u00a0 Sounds interesting right. Everyday, he ate the SEsha prasAdham (remnants) of\u00a0mAmunigaL. He used to consume his prasAdham on the same banana leaf on which mAmunigaL ate. As\u00a0mAmunigaL\u00a0finishes with curd rice,\u00a0 paravasthu pattarpirAn jIyar wants to consume prasAdham without changing the taste (from curd to\u00a0dhAl).\u00a0Thus, he became to be known popularly as \u201cmOr munnAr ayyar .<\/p>\n Though they heard about\u00a0mAmunigaL,\u00a0\u00a0they did not have great attachment towards him. But slowly they came to know about the glories of\u00a0mAmunigaL and even heard\u00a0 that many great personalities such as\u00a0kandhAdai aNNan,\u00a0eRumbi appA \u00a0have taken\u00a0shelter of mAmunigaL.<\/p>\n vEdhavalli: pAtti , how did they become\u00a0\u00a0disciples of\u00a0maNavALa mAmunigaL?<\/p>\n pAtti : Yes\u00a0vEdhavalli ,\u00a0eRumbi appA was the one to inform mAmunigaL that they are ready for AchArya sambandham .\u00a0ponnadikkAl jIyar\u00a0says to\u00a0mAmunigaL “they have been blessed with discussions with eRumbi appA and they have all the qualification to become your Sishyas”. They both asked\u00a0\u00a0mAmunigaL to\u00a0accept them and bless them . Like wise, mAmunigaL\u00a0 did pancha samaskaram to both\u00a0appiLLai, appiLLAr .<\/p>\n appiLLAr is given the responsibility of taking care of jIyar mutt\u2019s all daily activities such as thadhIyArAdhanam.\u00a0Just like\u00a0kidAmbi AchAn\u00a0served\u00a0emperumAnAr\u00a0by fully taking care of mutt responsibilities,\u00a0mAmunigaL\u00a0was served by appiLLAr.<\/p>\n appiLLai writes vyAkyAnams for thiruvanthAdhis per mAmunigaL\u2019s divine instructions and assists mAmunigaL in his many dhivya prabhandham related kainkaryams.<\/p>\n During the final days of\u00a0mAmunigaL, appiLLAr\u00a0prays to him, and requests him to bless him with archA vigraham (deity) of mAmunigaL for\u00a0their daily worship.\u00a0mAmunigaL\u00a0gives the sombu (vessel) which he uses daily and they use that to prepare two vigrahams (deities) and each keep one vigraham (deity) of mAmunigaL for their daily worship .<\/p>\n So kids let us pray\u00a0at their lotus feet that we too get a little bit of such\u00a0abhimAnam of AchAryan.<\/p>\n Kids so far we discussed about glories of\u00a0mAmunigaL and his\u00a0ashta dhik gajangaL .<\/p>\n parASara : We learned so much today pAtti.<\/p>\n pAtti : Yes dear. I am also going to tell you all something very important now. Listen carefully.<\/p>\n Subsequent to the times of mAmunigaL, many great AchAryas continued to bless the devoted ones in every town and village. The AchAryas stayed in dhivya dhESams, abhimAna sthalams, AzhwAr\/AchArya avathAra sthalams and other kshEthrams, and shared the knowledge and nurtured bhakthi in everyone.<\/p>\n thirumazhisai aNNavappangAr and first SrIperumbUthUr embAr jIyar were from recent past (200 years ago) and contributed significantly to our sampradhAyam through their in-depth granthams and kainkaryams.<\/p>\n Whatever knowledge I have shared with you has come through this paramparA of AchAryas. We have to be thankful to them always. Hope you all had a nice time .
